My mom has liver issues, which leads her to have a lot of water retention around her stomach. Aside from water pills and getting the water manually removed, are there any special diets and/or herb supplements that she could try to help remove this water? Any advice would be helpful!!
Thanks! ALSO***DONT reply if your suggestion is that there isnt anything that we can do, because I wont take no for an answer.

there’s always something…by chance have you spoken with a naturopathic doctor in your area? I’d also inquire with a doctor of acupuncture. Good luck

The problem exists because the blood flow coming into the liver is a higher volume than can actually flow through the liver. The result is that fluid from the blood literally gets squeezed through the abdominal lining into the abdomen since there is no where for all the blood to go. Its like trying to spray a garden hose through a sponge – if the flow through a hose is low, all the water will flow through a sponge, but if the faucet is turned on too hard, some of the water will spray back into your face.

This is strictly a physical problem with blood flow through the liver. The only way to reduce the fluid is to reduce blood flow by lowering blood volume or blood pressure, have vascular surgery to shunt blood flow around the liver, or by or getting a liver transplant. A diet low in salt will help,as does restricting water intake. Black tea is a herb that helps, but it does the same thing as prescription medications, so herbs don’t offer any advantage over adjusting the dosage of the prescription medication.

If your mom is a potential candidate for a liver transplant, its possible you could be donor. Part of the liver can be removed from a living person and then transplanted into another person. Its pretty amazing. The donor’s liver grows back, and the transplanted liver part grows into a complete liver. The downside to this is that removing part of the liver is major surgery that requires a month or more to recover and it is a litter riskier than donating a kidney

Sounds like your mother probably has cirrhosis. All they can do for cirrhosis is to treat the symptoms and try to slow down the progression of the disease. If your mother has fluid problems to this level, she is in the more advanced stage of the disease. The only diet I know that helps the fluid retention is to avoid salt. I had cirrhosis, so I know all about fluid retention and getting “tapped.” They can do a procedure called TIPS which is a shunt that helps with fluid problems. I don’t know if your mom could benefit from this or not. There are some downsides to it also which you could discuss with her doctor. When my fluid problems increased as my liver failed, they used to increase my diuretic drugs or do some adjustments. I quickly found out that Lasix alone did really next to nothing for me no matter how high the dose was. When they added Spironolactone on top of the Lasix, that worked very well for me. I had to increase the dosage from time to time, but it worked. Talk to her doctor about adjusting her medication. The diuretic drugs will work better than any herb supplements. If her liver is not functioning well to begin with, she needs to get approval from her doctor before she takes anything including any herbs or supplements.

I would hope that your mom could be a candidate to getting a liver transplant which could save her life.
I had cirrhosis and a liver transplant.

You should definitely have your doctor refer you to a dietician. For your anemia and low iron, you should be taking a daily iron supplement and you need to drink a big glass or orange juice to take the iron tablet….the vitamin c in the OJ will help your body better absorb the iron. Your white blood cell count is probably low from vitamin deficiency. You should also have your doctor check your vitamin D levels. Bottom line, once you are better, see a dietician to get a health vegan meal plan that will ensure you are getting all your vitamins and nutrients. If you are serious about being a vegan, you can still get your vitamins, amino acids, ect…but you will have to be diligent about eating properly and taking supplements.

I know your probably not going to like this, but i would suggest temporary going off your vegan diet completely, your health is the most valuable thing in the world… so go back to a normal diet eating healthy food, once your health problems have cleared up ease yourself back into a vegetarian diet (dairy and eggs included) see how you go for a couple of months, if your body is okay with this i would suggest just staying at this level… if you really want to you can then go back to being a vegan.

Also adding this in, to the person who was stating meat basically kills your body, that is not true at all meat is very good for you, and should not be excluded from a diet as it has more health benefits as it does risks… just like a whole vegan diet has benefits as well as risks. People need to keep this in mind when answering questions, an open mind is always best.

You’re killing yourself. We would rather have you here than the couple animals you *might* “save” (no animals get saved btw) . Please, eat some animal products like we were supposed to!

  8. Emmanuel says:

those who have been on a detox for the liver how long did it take before you could eat grains and sugars again? I will beable to start eating animal protein at the end of the week. how long after that should i beable to eat grains and sugars?

  9. I would take it slowly. I would suggest the mildest meats. White fish poached is very mild. You can dress it with lemon. I wouldn’t go too heavy on red meat. Maybe, make chicken broth, and eat the broth with some of the chicken that you used for it. That will be mild for digestion. Then, for sugar, I just would omit it. It is very addictive. That is my personal feeling. Plus, it is empty calories. Also, I wouldn’t make heavy gravies, or eat mayonnaise as those are too heavy if your diet was simpler. I posed a similar question, and just received spam answers, so I had to figure this out myself.
Regarding grain, I would really wait a while. For sandwiches, meat or turkey wrapped in lettuce.

You might also want to try the Fatty Liver Diet Secrets book on this site. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it.
